All the food items that we or (anybody else in the world) consumes can be divided into seven nutrients or scientifically named groups. These nutrients are called Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals, Fibers, and Water. No any other items are available in any food, other than these seven. The body requires all these for growth, maintenance, and development. Without any of these, the body will not be able to survive but if in excess can also cause damage. Therefore, we must know how much of each of these foods is to be consumed for the best of health. We should also be aware about various functions of each of these different types of nutrients.
We would like to provide adequate information so that you can consciously decide about what you want to eat and what would be the best combination that you can choose.
Carbohydrates are the foods, which give you energy required for your daily activities. They sustain you throughout the day.
The Proteins are the building blocks of the body. It is the protein that forms the bulk of the muscles of the body. They are the main constituents of the wall of each cell in the body. They are also the major components of the nerve cells.
The Fats the so-called oil and cholesterol – are also components of the cell wall, the nerve cells and the brain. Fat also form the energy storage of the body. Whenever there is excess energy supplied to the body (in the form of foods eaten throughout the day), they will get converted into fats and get stored inside the body. This is what leads to overweight problem and subsequently heart disease.
Vitamins are the protective food items, which are required in small quantities. They protect the skin, eyes bones, nerves and the heart. In adequate vitamins in diet will lead to many diseases like blindness, bleeding gums, weak bones and the degeneration of the brain.
Minerals like Calcium, Potassium, and Sodium help in bone formation, give strength to the structure of the body, form major portion of Hemoglobin and the digestive enzymes which help in breaking the foodstuff (metabolism). Without them, the life would not have been possible. All-common food items and juices supply us with minerals.
Fibers are food items that cannot be utilized by the body but are essential in the metabolism. They help in relieving constipation, prevent the absorption of cholesterol thus preventing heart disease. Fibers are very important for reduction of weight and control of diabetes.
Water does not have any energy (or calories) but is probably the most important part of our food. There is no function of the body than can be carried out without water. Starting from chewing, digesting, absorbing food-water is required for hundreds of functions of the body. Water forms more than 50% of blood, helps in excretion of toxins from the body through kidneys, regulates temperature of the body and most importantly help in carrying oxygen to all the parts of the body.
