Heart disease is one of the biggest killer in the world. India has the second largest number of people suffering from this deadly disease and the estimates suggests that we can be at the top of the list by 2045. The major contributing factor is lifestyle which comprises poor diet, physical inactivity, stress, etc. Food is a very important factor in the management of coronary artery disease, since the main items which deposit (cholesterol and triglycerides) are mainly supplied by the foods we eat. The good thing is that the diet can be modified and has the potential to prevent you from the pre-disposition of heart ailments.
Foods healthy for your heart:
1.) Oats: Oats contain heart healthy soluble fiber. When eaten regularly, oatmeal and oat bran may help lower total cholesterol by approximately 25%. In addition, oat bran can help to reduce the bad LDL cholesterol and raise the good HDL cholesterol.
2.) Garlic: Garlic is good for the heart. It helps to purify the blood and lower blood pressure. It also aids digestion, lower cholesterol and prevent flatulence. It acts as a diluting agent for blood and also has a role in the prevention of heart attack.
3.) Ginger:Ginger is considered a heart tonic. It is good for your heart as well as your stomach. Studies have shown that ginger significantly reduces the clumping of blood platelets thus reducing plaque formation and underlying atherosclerosis.
4.) Amla: Amla is the most widely used herb in the ayurvedic system of medicine. It effectively controls digestive problems, strengthens heart, and sustains defense mechanism, improves eyesight, imparts a natural glow to hair and body and a store house of vitamin C. Being rich in vitamin C amla is cardio-protective in nature.
5.) Arjuna bark: Arjuna bark acts as a heart stimulant. It lowers blood pressure and improves cholesterol profile. The bark contains usually a large quantity of tannin and calcium, small quantities of aluminium and magnesium and therefore, is cardio-protective in nature.
6.) Wheatgrass: Wheatgrass are grown from wheat within 7 days of plantation. The juice of wheatgrass is supposed to be a very useful food for heart, vitality, and gastrointestinal disorders. Wheatgrass juice helps to reduce high blood pressure and enhances the capillaries as the juice helps to reduce toxins from the body and gives the blood iron, which helps circulation. About 30-50 ml of juice is recommended per day.
7.) Cinnamon: Popularly known as dalchini in India. Cinnamon has strong antioxidant properties which makes it a cardio-protective herb.
8.) Dietary fiber:Regular intake of foods high in soluble fiber has proven role in reducing the levels of total cholesterol and bad cholesterol in the blood. Dietary fiber is found in whole cereals and pulses, fruits and vegetables. It is advised to include ample amounts of both soluble and insoluble fiber in the diet to provide optimal heart health.
