Terminalia Arjuna(Arjun ki Chhaal) in Corornary Heart Disease

Herbal medicine is one of the various therapies included under the heading of alternative medicines. Ayurveda mentions diseases of the heart and provides details of some plant extracts which could be useful to prevent and control the symptoms of cardiac diseases.Arjuna tree bark (Terminalia Arjuna) is one of them. It has been widely used in the Indian system of medicines since long for treatment of cardiac disease.
Dr. Ghoshal in 1909 at Calcutta studied the effect of bark powder on frog heart and noted increase in the force of contraction of the heart. Another research by Dr. Singh in 1982 observed decrease in blood pressure and heart rate in cat and dog. It was also noted to decrease serum cholesterol and blood sugar in experimental animals.
Dr. Dwivedi 1988 at Delhi carried out a clinical trial to test the effectiveness of Terminalia Arjuna bark powder. It was administered to 30 stable angina pectoris patients and found the drug to be effective in alleviating anginal pain and modify various coronary risk factors like obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia. They observed no side effects of the drug. This study supported the ancient believes that T. Arjuna bark powder is useful in the treatment of cardiac pain.
Dose for anginal pain: 500 mg of the powdered bark of Terminalia arjuna has been taken three times per day along with conventional treatment for chest pain for upto 3 months.
