Low-Carb Diet for a Healthy Life

We all would agree that losing weight isn’t easy.  There are a lot of factors that can contribute to weight loss, and it can be hard to know where to start. It’s important because being overweight can lead to health problems. These include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The best way to prevent these health problems is by losing those extra kilos. Low-carb diets have been gaining popularity in recent years as a way to lose weight. But are they effective?

What are Carbs?

The sugar molecules known as carbohydrates are one of the main nutrients present in food and drinks. This nutrient is the energy source for our body but it can also become the main reason for concern. Carbohydrates break down into glucose which provides energy for the body but it also increases various health risks such as:
  • Problem during pregnancy
  • Issues with insulin production
  • Diabetes
  • Decreases metabolic rate
  • Cholesterol

What Is Low-Carb Diet?

By low-carb diet, we mean cutting on the amount of carb intake. Food items like bread, pasta, and rice contain carbohydrates. They are also found in sugary foods like candy and cake. A low-carb diet can help you lose weight and improve your overall health. To follow this diet we must first know what to eat and what to avoid.

Foods To Avoid

You can begin your diet by avoiding the following food items and drinks
  • Packaged Fruit juices, soft drinks, ice-creams any item which contains added sugar.
  • Starch Vegetables such as sweet potatoes, corn, white potatoes, beets, green peas, and turnips.
  • Trans- fats
  • Highly processes foods
Instead, add the following items to your food shopping
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Spinach, Broccoli, Cauliflower, carrots
  • Fruits
  • Dry fruits
A low-carb diet typically limits carbs to 20 to 57 grams per day and these levels produce 80 to 240 calories. Some low-carb diets severely restrict carbohydrates in the beginning and then progressively increase the number of carbs in your meals.

Benefits of Low-Carb Diet

There are many health benefits of following a low-carb diet. The most known benefit is weight loss. When you consume fewer carbs, your body has to burn more fat for energy. This means that you will be burning more calories and lose weight as a result. Low-carb diets have also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, which can help to prevent type 2 diabetes. In addition, low-carb diets can help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. All this will ultimately result in a healthy heart. If you think you will struggle to stick to your diet then you must try the following tips for low-carb diets:
  1. Find healthy substitutes for your favorite carb-rich foods. For example, instead of pasta, try spiralized vegetables or zucchini noodles. And instead of bread, try wraps made with lettuce or collard greens.
  2. Get enough protein and fat. A common mistake people make when starting a low-carb diet is not eating enough protein and fat, which can lead to hunger and cravings. Make sure you’re including plenty of both in your meals and snacks.
  3. Don’t go too low. If you find that you’re struggling to stick to a very low-carb diet (<50 grams per day), it might be helpful to increase your carb intake slightly. This will help ensure you’re getting the nutrients you need and help make the diet more sustainable in the long run.
